The Lakeland Primary Care Network is a growing not-for-profit corporation serving fourteen communities in northeast Alberta, delivering programs and services to enhance the delivery of primary health care. Our teams of nurses, social workers, dietitian, kinesiologist, and physicians work together to provide excellent care for patients and their families.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Kinesiologist works collaboratively with patients, family physicians in the community, other health professionals, and local and regional programming in a multi-disciplinary environment to ensure a high quality of evidence-based health care to the practice population. The role utilizes physical activity and exercise as medicine for improving the health, fitness, function, and well-being of patients.

What you will do...
  • Work collaboratively within the PCN to enhance the delivery of primary care services
  • Conduct lifestyle, health and fitness assessments and use outcomes of assessments to guide decisions regarding physical activity and exercise prescriptions
  • Design individually based activity and exercise prescriptions for the conditioning of patients with consideration of their special requirement(s)
  • Provide physical activity clearance and seek medical clearance (where necessary) for patients before providing physical activity prescriptions
  • Demonstrate, supervise, and monitor physical activity and exercise prescriptions with individual patients and small groups
  • Conduct population targeted physical activity and exercise classes such as walking classes, group resistance training, etc
  • Monitor physiological measurements such as blood pressure, heart rate, blood glucose level and oxygen saturation before, during and after exercise to ensure the safety of physical activity and exercise prescriptions
  • Provide physical activity and exercise counselling
  • Answer patients’ questions regarding physical activity and exercise
  • Provide tailored information based on patients’ readiness to change their activity patterns
  • Educate patients on the different ways in which they can become physically active
  • Educate patients on the benefits of physical activity and exercise as it pertains to their own health and circumstance
  • Help patients recognize and overcome their barriers to being physically active
  • Provide social support and motivation to patients by creating goal setting
  • Conduct educational workshops on physical activity and exercise
  • Assist with development of systems and communications protocols to facilitate patient follow up with PCN staff or family physician
  • Assist in setting up health promotion programs relevant to the needs of the practice population
  • Assist in developing and implementing patient self-management programs
  • Coordinate with AHS to ensure relevant regional programming is effectively used
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate records in keeping with practice policy
  • Identify data needs, analyze data, and communicate results as appropriate
  • Assist in the implementation of strategies for improving the quality and provision of care for the practice population
  • Initiate and maintain positive community and regional partnerships
What you need to succeed...
  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or Kinesiology
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist and/or the ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist certificate
  • Experience working with a geriatric population and/or chronic disease management preferred
  • Current CPR certified, current registration in good standing
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience required
  • A class 5 driver’s license is needed for traveling to PCN Hubs/Clinics on a need basis
  • Ability to make evidence-based decisions and monitor clinical standards
  • Strong oral, written, and analytical skills; self-directed and accountable and high level of perceptiveness
  • Ability to build a good working relationship with healthcare professionals, clients, and other members of the community
  • Experience in establishing protocols for program start-ups, especially developing plans and priorities when workload varies
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time effectively and be flexible in a very active work environment
  • High levels of integrity and professional behavior
  • Ability to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Attention to details and problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Able to work independently and demonstrates ability to be proactive in completing duties
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to handle multiple assignments and tasks while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to remain calm in difficult situations and deal effectively with those who are in distress
  • Ability to maintain effective working relations with employees and patients
  • Ability to maintain accuracy while multi-tasking or working under pressure
  • Ability to collaborate with other multi-disciplinary team members
  • Understanding EMR software is an asset
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office suite
